This Inflatable Robot Whale Ditches Propellers for Fins

In a refreshing break from loud, finger-chopping quadcopters, researchers at Keio University have created a soft, helium-filled robot that gently flaps through the air like a serene land whale. Dubbed the “Floating Companion,” this silent blimp uses flapping fins instead of propellers, making it quiet and safe enough to actually touch without requiring a trip to the emergency room. The design, intended for indoor companionship and ambient alerts, was so well-received it won a Best Paper award at the ACM DIS 2026 conference, proving that sometimes the best robot is the one that won’t give you a concussion.
