Shield AI is developing the X-BAT, a fully autonomous vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) combat aircraft concept with a projected range of over 2,000 nautical miles, or about 3,700 kilometers. Billed as the world’s first AI-piloted VTOL fighter jet, it’s designed to operate without runways, launching from ships, remote islands, or austere forward bases. The company is targeting first flights in 2026 and full production and operational readiness by 2029, proving that your future AI wingman is still a few years away from clocking in.
