In what’s becoming a familiar sight—albeit for a very exclusive club—another rocket has successfully returned from the edge of space to land itself gracefully on Earth. Chinese commercial space company LandSpace joined the party on Wednesday, successfully recovering the first stage of its Zhuque-3 (ZQ-3) rocket after a launch from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China.
The Zhuque-3 Y2 rocket blasted off at 7:35 a.m. Beijing Time, delivering the Honghu-03 satellite into its designated orbit. Minutes later, the over 40-meter-tall first stage booster executed a series of complex maneuvers to slow its descent before touching down vertically on its deployable legs at a prepared landing site. The successful mission marks China’s first-ever land-based recovery of an orbital-class rocket booster, a critical and frankly non-negotiable step for any company serious about competing in the modern launch market.
This achievement is distinct from the sea-based net recovery of the state-developed Long March-10B rocket in July, highlighting the parallel, and increasingly competitive, tracks of China’s state-owned and private space industries. LandSpace, a private firm, is clearly positioning its stainless-steel, methane-fueled Zhuque-3 as a direct competitor to SpaceX’s Falcon 9, with a design philosophy that also borrows a few, let’s say, aesthetic cues from Starship.
Why is this important?
Landing a rocket booster is the new “Hello, World!” for aspiring space powers. It’s the barrier to entry for the low-cost launch game that SpaceX created. By sticking this landing, LandSpace has proven its technical approach and catapulted itself into the top tier of commercial launch providers. While there’s a long road from one successful recovery to the kind of routine reuse that makes launches truly cheap, this is a loud declaration of intent. It signals that the global duopoly on reusable rockets is officially over, and the race to build the satellite mega-constellations of the future just got a lot more interesting.
