In a move that injects a massive dose of capital into the unglamorous world of earthmoving, Gravis Robotics has secured a staggering $200 million in Series A funding. The round, led by SoftBank, marks the largest Series A in the history of construction robotics and signals a serious bet that AI’s next frontier is the chaotic, muddy, and unpredictable construction site. Spun out of the prestigious ETH Zurich in 2022, Gravis is giving a digital brain transplant to machines that haven’t fundamentally changed in half a century.

Most AI-powered robots prefer their worlds neat and tidy. Self-driving cars stick to paved roads, and warehouse bots glide across flat concrete floors. An excavator, however, performs a brute-force ballet by intentionally smashing into the environment. Its job is to violently reshape the world, digging through soil, rocks, and debris. Instead of navigating a static world, the Gravis AI platform is designed to understand and manipulate a dynamic one. The company’s models are trained on what it calls “billions of cubic yards of simulated earth,” allowing the AI to generalize its understanding from soft clay to dense, rock-filled soil. Crucially, the system is hardware-agnostic, designed to be retrofitted onto existing fleets from various manufacturers. This means construction giants don’t need to buy a whole new fleet of futuristic machines; they can upgrade the dumb muscle they already own.
